Taking Care of the Land

We see ourselves as custodians of the land, nourishing the soil and building soil fertility naturally. Around 95% of food production  relies on soil. Organic farming sustains the health of soil, ecosystems and people and contributes to soil carbon sequestration.

We work with the Sustainable Soils Alliance and the Soil Association to raise awareness of the importance of looking after our soil.

The Secret Life of Soil

The Secret Life of Soil

For us everything starts with healthy soil: it grows the very best food and draws down carbon from the atmosphere to help prevent climate change. We plant clover and grass mixes to restore nutrients into the soil without having to use artificial fertilisers. Goodness from the Ground Up

Goodness from the Ground Up

In the last century, agriculture lost its way, with intensive farming methods depleting the soil’s nutrients and overdosing on chemicals and pesticides to try and make up for it. Organic farming encourages wildlife which feed on the bugs that could harm our crops, acting as a natural pest control.

Soil is so much more than mud or dirt

Soil is so much more than mud or dirt

We think of soil as mud or dirt – something that needs to be cleaned up… Not anymore! Join Tom, our soil detective, who will explain why we care about our soil as much as our cows and that’s a lot!

At Yeo Valley, we are always making sure that we look after our soil, because it needs to be a safe and nourishing home for millions of creatures, like moles, microbes, soil insects, worms, and fungi who all do their bit to keep the soil full of goodness.

Did you know that maintaining healthy soil can help reverse the effects of climate change? That’s right!  Healthy soils don’t just grow food, they can also help with global warming.

Soil Health

Clover

Soil Health

We plant a grass mix, including clover and chicory on the family farm in Somerset, to help keep our soil in tip-top condition.

Clover uses the sun’s energy and fixes nitrogen in the soil to help other plants grow. No artificial fertilisers needed and, by growing clover, our cows get a tasty addition to their grass salads.

Wild about Wildlife

Did you know organic farms are home to up to 50% more wildlife?

Being organic means our farms are naturally buzzing with wildlife. That’s because we don’t use damaging chemicals or artificial fertilisers, keeping our land as a safe and flourishing habitat for all our little creatures.

Change is as Good as a Rest

Change is as Good as a Rest

We believe in regenerative organic farming. That means rotating crops and grass around the land make it more fertile and keep pests and disease at bay – no artificial fertilisers or pesticides needed.

Here in the Valley, our crops and cows rotate between different fields. It’s one of the ancient ways of farming, it’s sustainable and it reflects nature’s cycles.

Our Healthy Herd

Organic farming means better living conditions, non-GMO foods, time spent roaming outdoors and so much more.
