Breakfast has long been called the most important meal of the day and whilst this message has probably been oversold, eating a nutritious breakfast can certainly set your mood, energy and focus for the day ahead. When it comes to timing, there are certainly no rules; some people naturally want breakfast first thing, whilst others might prefer something later in the morning. Either way, planning your breakfasts can be a game-changer in ensuring you have something balanced, delicious and ready to go. Is yogurt a healthy breakfast choice?  Yogurt is a breakfast staple, being packed with great nutrition from the protein, calcium and B vitamins as well as providing live cultures, for me it makes a daily appearance at the breakfast table. Whilst cereals are a convenient option I am all about getting those little extras in like a dollop of yogurt and a sprinkle of seeds to provide a bit more balance. So, whether I am adding some Yeo Valley Organic Greek Style Natural yogurt to some cereal for more protein or mixing kefir into overnight oats for some gut support I know I am setting myself and my family up for the day. What is a quick breakfast on busy mornings?  I am big fan of anything that makes mornings easier. Prepping breakfasts ahead of time is one of the simplest ways to reduce stress and ensure you’re eating well. I find things like overnight oats, breakfast muffins and chia puddings all work well to prep in advance. I particularly love these mango breakfast pots. They are a great balanced option with plenty of fibre to help with slow release of energy to keep you fuelled for the day. Another tip for easy breakfast wins is to have a good stock of frozen fruit, I love utilising frozen fruit to make quick and easy compotes, chia jams or to throw straight onto yogurt bowls. If you have little fruit bats at home like me frozen fruits are also a great money saver. How can breakfast support gut health?  Breakfast is a great opportunity to get in foods that will support health whether that be getting in fibre and kefir to support gut health or ensuring you are getting started on your protein goals for the day with Greek Recipe Yogurt. If you are looking to support gut health, then incorporating kefir into your breakfast routine is a simple habit to include. Supporting your gut microbiome (the trillions of microbes that inhabit our large colon) not only helps support the gut and digestion but also wider health, like our immune and mental health. Kefir is made in a similar way to other yogurts but has even more bacterial cultures, a whopping 14 different cultures are in the Yeo Valley Organic Kefir, which means billions of live bacteria in every pot. Breakfast can sometimes be lacking in protein and yet protein is such an important nutrient that helps give you energy and keeps you feeling fuller for longer. It is also important for muscle health and a range of functions throughout the body. When I am looking to get some protein into breakfast my go to is the Yeo Valley Organic Greek Recipe yogurt, as a strained yogurt it is particularly high in protein. My current favourite breakfast using the Greek recipe is this warm date yogurt bowl, quick to put together and so delicious. Another tip for getting protein in is to add things like nuts and seeds to breakfast or opt for savoury options using other protein rich foods like eggs and beans, like these creamy harissa beans. How can I make breakfast more enjoyable? Weekend breakfasts call for something a little different, with the slower pace and a little more time for something enjoyable. For my family weekend breakfasts often include things like pancakes, breakfast crumble or something savoury. These fluffy lemon and raspberry yogurt pancakes are a real crowd pleaser in my house especially when served with the Yeo Valley Organic raspberry yogurt. I always make sure I make a few extra pancakes to take out and about on a walk or to the park. Weekends are also a good opportunity to try to mix things up at breakfast and try something a little different like this breakfast crumble. When footballer star Chloe Kelly came to the valley, we had a chat about the importance of nutrition for her as a professional athlete and why good-quality protein is key. Here is our in-house nutritionist, Dr Alice's, lowdown on protein.  What exactly is protein?  Protein is one of the three essential macronutrients (alongside carbohydrates and fats). It’s made up of amino acids, the building blocks your body uses to grow, repair, and stay healthy. There are 22 different amino acids, and 9 of them are called essential because we can only get them from food. Foods that contain all 9 are called complete proteins, and dairy is a great example. Animal-based foods like meat, milk, yogurt, and cheese tend to be complete, but plant sources such as beans, lentils, and nuts can be combined to provide balance. As always, variety is key. Why protein matters? For athletes and people who exercise, nutrition and generally eating well is important for: helping with performance reducing risk of injury and illness helping with recovery Protein plays an important role in this, as protein is needed for building and repairing muscles, as well as replacing glycogen stores to help in recovery. However, protein isn't just for athletes; it is important for keeping muscles healthy as we age, as well as a range of other functions, such as making hormones and enzymes as well as appetite regulation.  How much protein do I need?  When it comes to how much protein we need, whilst there are general guidelines that advise 0.75g per kg of body weight, it really isn’t a one-size-fits-all all and very much depends on a few factors, including levels of activity. However, most of us can meet our requirements through the food we eat, where choosing whole and natural foods is best. Foods that are a source of protein are things like meat, dairy, and eggs, but also plant foods such as beans, lentils, nuts and seeds. Whilst professional athletes will need to take a more measured approach for most of us, including a source of protein with each meal and snack throughout the day will help you meet your protein needs. Dairy is a particularly great source of protein for those who are doing a lot of exercise, I love yogurt as a natural source of protein, particularly the Yeo Valley Greek Recipe being high in protein at 9g per 100g. Dr Alice’s Top Tips for Looking After Your Gut Health This New Year The festive season is always busy, and as we step into 2026, many of us start thinking about how to feel healthier and more energised. One area that’s well worth your attention is gut health. Your gut and the trillions of microbes living in your large intestine don’t just help with digestion. They play a key role in your immune system, metabolism, skin health and even mental wellbeing. I’m not a huge fan of strict New Year’s resolutions, but I do believe in simple, achievable habits that make a long-lasting difference. And the good news is: when it comes to gut health, small changes go a very long way. Below are my top five gut-focused goals for 2026. Choose one, or try all five; consistency is what counts, and your gut will thank you for it. 1. Why are beans so good for gut health? Beans, lentils and chickpeas (collectively known as legumes) are some of the best foods you can eat for a healthy gut microbiome. Why they help: They’re rich in prebiotic fibre, which feeds your beneficial gut microbes. They support stable digestion and long-term gut resilience. They’re incredibly affordable and versatile. Aim for one portion of legumes per day, but if you’re not used to eating them, start with 2–3 portions per week and build up gradually. 1. When do different operations teams begin preparing for the festive period? Much like elves, our Supply Chain and Manufacturing teams start planning for Christmas long before the first New Year’s resolution has even been broken. Every January, we gather the lessons learnt and put a structure in place that covers every consideration for the year ahead. By August, we’re focusing on the finer details, working closely with our customers and suppliers to confirm their festive plans and schedules so we can manage demand. 2. What changes most behind the scenes when Christmas demand increases? Christmas brings the biggest shift in demand we all see, setting the rhythm for our entire year. Fridge space for dairy shrinks as people make room for festive feast favourites. The moment turkeys vanish from supermarket shelves, health-conscious products reclaim their spot, and we see a surge in demand. This is why we plan months in advance to keep shelves brimming with our more indulgent and seasonal favourites, like Double Cream in December, and our more health-conscious products like Kefir and Greek Recipe for the new year.. 3. How do the teams – from Engineering to Packing – keep production lines running smoothly in the face of increased demand?  It takes a full team effort to keep the magic alive. Forecasting and planning start early, so we can predict demand and stock build before the holiday season hits. Our dairy supply team work with over 100 organic farmers to ensure that the milk and other raw products keep flowing. Site and Engineering crews work like Santa’s helpers to upgrade equipment and prepare for changing order days and seasonal launches. Warehousing and Logistics handle huge swings in storage needs. By planning early and pulling together, we keep the production lines humming throughout the festive season. 4. If the teams could invent a Yeo Christmas product, what would it be? Christmas Pudding Yogurt, or Yeo Ho Ho Pudding. 5. Which products keep the teams busiest in December Alongside other festive favourites, our Creams take centre stage at this time of year. Their short shelf life means we’re working at full pelt to fulfil demand and guarantee freshness in every spoonful. At the same time, Natural Yogurt sneaks onto the list as customers gear up for their health kick in the new year. It’s a merry mix of indulgence and good intentions, and we make sure we’re ready and waiting when the time comes. 6. What are the biggest challenges you are facing in operations at Christmas? We manage a huge range of products, some of which can only be made on a specific site, by a specific machine. We also want to make sure the team has time to enjoy the festivities with their loved ones, which means taking out around 100 hours of production. On top of all that, we flex to each customer's individual shutdowns and changing order days while juggling high order variances. You can see why we have to start planning in January; it takes meticulous planning and teamwork across all corners of the business.  7. Is there anything surprising that needs to happen in operations so Christmas goes without a hitch? Behind the scenes there’s plenty of planning to make the season sparkle. Our operational processes stay consistent throughout the year, yet we add a sprinkle of extra detail to ensure everything runs smoothly. We also coordinate one of the most important tasks of the year, making sure our teams across Yeo Valley receive their Christmas hampers full of Yeo goodies. It’s a small touch, but it helps everyone enjoy the celebrations. 8. What songs would the different teams add to the Operations Christmas playlist? Digging deep: the secret life of soil at Yeo Valley  Why soil is so important (and why we sniff it)?  When you visit Yeo Valley’s Holt Farms, don’t be surprised if you’re handed a shovel. That’s what happened when we met Will Mayor, Yeo’s Farm Development Manager. According to Will, a teaspoon of Yeo Valley’s organic soil contains more living organisms than there are humans on this earth. That life, like bacteria, fungi, worms, and microfauna, is what drives nutrient cycling, plant health, carbon storage and water retention.   Healthy soil should:  Store carbon  Improve biodiversity  Increase resilience to drought and flooding  Boosts grass nutrition for cows  Reduces the need for synthetic fertiliser  For Will and the team, that’s why every day starts with soil. ‘Carry a spade wherever you go,’ Will advises, plunging his into the ground, adding - ‘you’ll never know when you’ll need to sniff some!’ And yes, he means that literally. Because at Yeo Valley, soil isn’t just dirt - it’s the beating heart of everything they do. From lush grazing pastures to the iconic, creamy yogurt churning just down the lane, it all begins here. Nature’s nitrogen factory - How organic farms create their own nitrogen, without fertiliser.  Yeo Valley Organic follows an organic, regenerative system that works with nature, not against it. It relies on plants like clover, birds-foot trefoil, and chicory to do the heavy lifting.  So, how does this work?  Clover ‘fixes’ nitrogen from the air into the soil, burying up to 250kg of nitrogen per hectare, if a third of the pasture is clover. Every root, every blade of grass, every hoof-print helps build a stronger, more resilient ecosystem.  Will even disclosed that happy cows give their contentment away on their bodies - ’happy lines’, as he calls them - horizontal stripes across the flank of the cow indicating healthy lifestyles, excellent nutrition and low-stress lifestyles. But many species continue to grow through winter, offering amazing colour and texture on cold, crisp days. Even though you may not see much above ground, fungi are incredibly active right now. Beneath your feet, huge networks of mycelium are busy breaking down leaves, twigs, and organic matter. This underground system feeds plants, boosts soil health, and keeps entire ecosystems thriving. What Exactly Are Fungi? Fungi aren’t plants or animals; they’re an entirely separate kingdom. The UK is home to around 15,000 species, with thousands more yet to be identified. With ongoing restoration work and careful grazing management, fungi diversity is predicted to grow even more in the coming years.  Top 5 Fungi to Spot in Winter - Plantlife  Perfect for nature lovers.  1. Scarlet Elfcup (Sarcoscypha austriaca) Bright red, cup-shaped fungi that appear in damp woodland. Folklore says woodland elves used them as tiny bath tubs! 2. Jelly Ear (Auricularia auricula) Brown, jelly-like, and shaped just like an ear. You’ll find them on old trees and fallen branches, especially in colder months. 3. Velvet Shank (Flammulina velutipes) A true winter mushroom with bright orange caps. They grow in tight clusters on dead wood and stay vibrant even in frosty weather. 4. Candlesnuff Fungus (Xylaria hypoxylon) Black-and-white, matchstick-shaped fungi that look like snuffed-out candle wicks. A common sight on mossy tree stumps. 5. Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) Colourful, fan-shaped brackets that stack like shelves on dead wood. Historically used as decoration for hats and home displays. FAQs Q: Do fungi grow in winter?  A: Yes. While fungi peak in autumn, many species, such as Velvet Shank and Winter Chanterelle, fruit throughout winter. Q: Why are fungi important in winter?  A: Their underground mycelium breaks down organic material, enriches soil, and supports trees and plants during their dormant period. Q: Where is the best place to spot winter fungi in the UK?  A: Woodlands, parks, dead wood, grassy fields, and organic farmland like Yeo Valley, where healthy soil supports diverse fungi. Q: Are winter fungi safe to forage?  A: Some are edible, some are not. Always consult a trained mycologist, many fungi look similar and can be toxic.

If you’re looking to celebrate more thoughtfully this year, here are eight inspiring ways to do just that.

Eight creative ideas for a sustainable Christmas

As the evenings begin to close in, the jobs on the farm need to be squeezed into a shorter day. Whilst organic farming is sometimes a battle against the weather, it can also be a race against time, and that’s certainly what it feels like in the autumn! Harvesting the Last Cut of Grass We made a fourth cut of grass for silage at the end of October, and now the silage clamps (the cows’ winter larders) are full. Silage is grass that’s “pickled”: cut, preserved, fermented, and compressed until it’s needed. This year, we were working from 8 a.m. until past midnight to bring in the 400 acres of herbal leys before the rain arrived. You have to make the most of every sunny day on the farm! Feeding the Fields Naturally As the temperature drops, grass growth slows down, so all our work over the summer, bringing in winter feed, now starts to pay off. Being organic, we don’t use chemical fertilisers or artificial pesticides anywhere on the farm. Instead, we compost the manure the cows produce. We use this to feed the life in the soil, which helps to enhance the soil's microbiome.  The Cows Come Indoors At the end of October, the cows came back into their sheds, not because they were scared of trick-or-treaters, but because the heavy and persistent rain had made the grazing fields too wet.  To protect the soil, we’ll keep them indoors now until the grass starts to grow again and ground conditions improve in the spring. This helps preserve the sward and the soil structure beneath it. Both are essential for healthy pastures next year. A Mixed Organic Farm, Working With Nature While everyone knows Yeo Valley Organic for our cows, our other animals and a variety of crops also play a vital role on the farm. Some examples are using our cover crops to protect the soil over the winter, whilst also providing feed for the sheep. Furthermore, the autumn crops are planted, ready to be harvested next year (winter wheat and beans.) Together, they provide natural fertilisers, pest control, and food, helping to keep the whole ecosystem in balance.  It’s this mixed farming approach, working alongside nature, that makes the farm more self-sufficient and resilient. Every animal and crop contributes to the health of the land, the food we produce, and the environment we share. It just goes to show, nature always has the answer!

Walking Mindfully  Walking lets you connect with nature; you can breathe in the crisp air and notice the falling leaves; it gives you a chance to reset. This is even more important now, as we race towards the end of the year, with earlier nights, the days get shorter, and our lives may be getting busier with the festive season approaching. Science agrees with a 2019 study that revealed that just 20 minutes in nature can lower your stress and boost serotine levels.1 While you enjoy the scenery, you’re also doing yourself a world of good.  Physical Benefits  As well as all the mental benefits of going on an adventure and walking more, there are, of course, physical benefits as well. It can help with memory and help your brain work better as walking increases blood flow, oxygen, and nutrients to the brain, and it can also stimulate the growth of new brain cells and connections.2 Walking also keeps your bones strong as you age and can reduce the risk of problems like osteoporosis.3  Sleep Soundly  After all that walking and being in the fresh air, you’ll also get better sleep. Taking a walk first thing in the morning, when it's finally light, helps to maintain your body’s natural body clock, which is important at this time of year as the days get darker. It has also been found that those who do moderate exercise, like walking, sleep better and for longer.4  Our in-house nutritionist, Dr Alice, says.  “As a nutritionist, I am often talking about how diet is just one piece of the puzzle and that other lifestyle measures, such as exercise, are also important when it comes to overall health and well-being. When talking about exercise, people often think they need to hit the gym hard, but simply increasing movement by walking is fantastic and is so beneficial to health.” On top of all that, it is a chance to connect not only with nature and discover new things on your walks, but also to connect with friends and your community. Explore the Benefits of an Autumn Walk 

1. Get Mulching  Mulch, mulch, mulch. Yes, we know that we said this in the spring, but it’s just as important now. It provides insulation to your plants, reduces soil erosion from heavy rain, and improves soil structure. Some mulches, like RocketGro’s Magic Mulch and Strulch, will also keep away hungry slugs and snails. Your plants will thank you! 2. Create Living Soil Create healthy soil over the next few months by expanding or creating no-dig beds. Put down sheets of cardboard, which will smother weeds, and then put layers of compost on top. Worms and microbes will then be at work breaking it down into fertile, living soil so that you can plant your veg and flowers in it. 3. Prep the Greenhouse Insulate the greenhouse walls and roof with bubble wrap (but ensure plants such as winter salads still get enough light by using thinner wrap in their part of the greenhouse). Bubble wrap can also be stored easily throughout the year and reused again and again. You also need to deep-clean the greenhouse to prevent diseases and overwintering pests. 4. Prune Fruit Trees Once your apple and pear trees have shed all their leaves, they will have entered their dormant period, which makes it easier to see their branches. Prune dead, crossed-over, or damaged branches to promote healthy growth and allow light to reach the centre of the tree and surrounding plants, which will help keep the tree healthy. Wait for summer to prune your plum, cherry and damson trees, to avoid Silver Leaf disease. 5. Protect Your Plants Protect tender plants such as tree ferns by covering their crowns and wrap your banana’s trunk in fleece. Mulch or place a deep pile of straw over Dahlias. Pop cloches over delicate veg like salad leaves and keep an eye out for pests. 6. Get Your Seedlings Ready for Spring Get ready for planting in the spring by keeping germinated seedlings in a sheltered cold frame and watch out for pests. You can start sowing them at the tail end of February. 7. Help the Wildlife in your Garden Leave some seed heads standing as they provide food for birds and some animals, hollow stems can also act as homes for insects like ladybirds over the winter. Also, keep an eye out for hedgehogs, as, although they normally hibernate from October, they may still be out in mild temperatures and may wake up for brief periods in search of food. This year Yeo Valley Organic planted a seed of a brand-new idea and it blossomed into something truly special. Inspired by the concept of “a Groundswell for gardeners”, Sarah Mead dreamed up the very first Yeo Valley Organic Garden Festival. The aim? To inspire gardeners of all kinds to think greener about how we grow, with sustainability and nature at the heart. A Festival Rooted in Sustainability  The festival was built around sustainable gardening practices, bringing together experts and enthusiasts to share knowledge, spark ideas, and celebrate nature. With an incredible line-up of speakers, including Arit Anderson, Alys Fowler, and Frances Tophill, visitors left with practical tips and a fresh dose of inspiration. Thanks to our sponsors Niwaki and Rocket Grow, the festival stretched across three main stages: The Hive The Germination Station The Yurt Each day explored a different theme: Seeds of Change, People & Pollinators, and Mission Possible. This wasn’t just music; it was a moment to reconnect, reflect, and let nature’s rhythm take over. The First Yeo Valley Organic Garden Festival: A Blooming Success 

By Dr Alice Mayor  September has been and gone, and we are truly back in the swing of the school routine. For many parents, that also means being back in the habit of prepping lunchboxes.  It’s easy to get stuck for ideas and feel like you’re packing the same thing every day. To help, here are 5 healthy, simple lunchbox ideas and some of my expert tips for variety, balance, and nutrition.  What are some healthy lunchbox ideas for kids? 1. 2-Ingredient Bagels  A homemade bread alternative using Yeo Valley Greek Recipe yogurt and flour. These are soft, filling, and much less processed than shop-bought bread.  Tip: For store-bought alternatives, look for pitta breads with minimal ingredients they are often cheaper and less processed than sliced bread. 2. Veggie-Packed Sandwich Fillers  I use tuna, chicken, or chickpeas mixed with vegetables and Yeo Valley Organic Greek Recipe yogurt. They are a healthier alternative to mayonnaise in sandwiches. This makes a creamy, lighter filling with extra protein.  3. Smokey Carrot Fritters   These are my tasty teatime leftover that doubles as a lunchbox snack. These are good lunch box fillers, that aren’t sandwiches, alongside a selection of chopped veggies and Yeo Valley Organic Cheddar cheese. These add colour, fibre, and flavour to lunchboxes.  4. Dairy Boost with Little Yeos   A kid-friendly way to include calcium and B vitamins. 5 Healthy and Easy Lunchbox Ideas for Kids 

As a nutritionist and a busy mum, granola is one of my go-to breakfasts. Yeo Valley Organic granola is packed with oats, nuts, and seeds, offering a delicious way to incorporate a variety of plants and a good dose of fibre into your diet. I often discuss fibre because most people could benefit from eating more. We should aim for 30 g daily, but many people fall short of this. Boosting the amount of fibre in the diet has many benefits, but most importantly, it is a great way to look after your gut and the trillions of microbes that inhabit it.  Another important way to look after your gut health is to eat a diverse range of plant foods like nuts, seeds, fruits and whole grains. Along with fibre, nuts and seeds contain healthy fats, including omega-3 (great for brain health), protein, and other important micronutrients. Brazil nuts, for example, are selenium powerhouses. Selenium is an antioxidant that helps with normal immune and thyroid function.  Breakfast cereals offer a quick and convenient breakfast, but I am often wary of the cereal aisle in the supermarket. Finding cereals that use whole, natural ingredients without additives can be challenging. However, the Yeo Valley Organic granola does just that, as it is made with no added fillers or ingredients you wouldn’t find in your kitchen cupboards. It is simple, but sometimes the best things are. What’s also fantastic about the Yeo Valley Organic granola is that it is made with 100% organic British oats. What is Organic September? Organic September is an annual celebration of all things organic. It is an opportunity to raise awareness about the benefits of organic – for people and the planet. The campaign draws together organic businesses from a wide range of sectors, including food and beverages and health and beauty, to highlight what these companies are doing . Why is Organic September important? Organic September is a great opportunity for people to learn more about choosing organic, and the positive impact it can have on the planet. Did you know, agricultural emissions could drop by 40-50% by 2050 if all of Europe’s farmland followed organic principles?! (1) The Organic September campaign helps showcase why organic farming is so important, which hopefully influences more people to choose organic more often!  What does Organic mean? Farming and producing organically ensures all parts of the supply chain are benefited. Whether that be the soil that grows the crops, the animals that produce products, the wildlife that live on the farm, or those that consume the product – each stakeholder is cared for and looked after to create high-quality products. For a product to be labelled as organic, at least 95% of ingredients must be produced organically. (2) So, by buying organic you are saying no to artificial fertilisers and chemical pesticides, ensuring higher animal welfare, and helping protect the local environment. How can you get involved? Throughout September (and beyond!) there are many ways you can get involved with the Organic September campaign. Whether that be making a conscious decision to try shopping organically this September, sharing your love for organic on social media, or organising an event in your local area. What Is Organic September?

As they strolled through rows of organic British Blackcurrants, Sarah caught up with Farmer James to find out exactly how their juicy organic British Blackcurrants go from crop to Yeo Valley Organic pots and how we've worked in partnership with a fellow British family farm for years. 

What makes Snells in Herefordshire the perfect partner for the blackcurrants in our organic yogurt? We have worked with 2 generations of the Snell Family for well over a decade, using their delicious organic blackcurrants in both our fruity big pots and our Fruity Favourites 4 pack. Strong communication is key - throughout the year, we will have regular catch-ups, so that we can ensure that both our volume requirements and the expected yields are aligned, and we have early insight into what is happening with the crop through the seasons. We have a year-round commitment to one another – a fruit with a story, a place and a purpose – something truly special. Can you describe the unique flavour profile of these delicious blackcurrants?

Blackcurrants are naturally tart and tangy, and so a great combination with our yogurt, their bold flavour balanced by the creaminess. Beneath the sharp, zesty edge of the blackcurrant lies a rich, dark berry sweetness – delicious. 

What is special about the relationship between Yeo Valley and British fruit farmers like The Snell Family, and how does this partnership ensure the highest quality organic fruit? We work hard to ensure that our relationships with farms such as Snells are based on a solid foundation of good communication and mutual understanding. At Yeo Valley, we have high-quality standards that need to be maintained to produce fantastic yogurts. In turn, we work closely to understand whether there are any particular challenges that might be coming down the road where we might be able to support. Working with transparency and honesty is always something that I prioritise, remembering that we are all human and all working hard in our own areas to produce great quality blackcurrants that will go into the best yogurt!  What’s the journey from Snell’s blackcurrant bushes to finished yogurt? The blackcurrant season begins in July and usually goes through to mid-August, weather dependent of course. At Snells, the fruit harvester works through the fields as the blackcurrants ripen, with the fruit then going to be frozen and final sorting to ensure all stems are removed. From there, the lorry is loaded and off down to our factory in Crewkerne, where the fruit preps (jammy yumminess!) are produced, which are subsequently added to the yogurt to produce the best home-grown blackcurrant goodness.  If customers are trying British Blackcurrant for the first time, what would you want them to know about the care, tradition and expertise that Herefordshire farmers like Snells brought to growing this distinctly British fruit?

The Snell family have been farming blackcurrants for 3 generations – consumers are not just tasting the fruit but they are experiencing generations of care, tradition and deep-rooted expertise. Some of the farms will have been growing for over 50 years – a strong heritage that Yeo Valley are proud to support. The Blackcurrant Fruity Big Pot is back!

It’s the summer holidays, and if your kids are anything like mine, the change in routine leads to more frequent calls for snacks. Today, for me, that came approximately 45 minutes after a hearty breakfast! I find being prepared with snack ideas is a huge help, especially with the long holidays, and sometimes you just need a little inspiration. I like to get in some great nutritious options, but we also like to include some fun foods or something we have created together in the kitchen. My biggest tip when it comes to snacking is to try to keep to a regular time each day and avoid snacks too close to mealtimes. This is not always possible, but there is nothing worse than lovingly preparing meals that don’t get eaten due to full tummies. One fun way to give kids some independence but also guide their choices is to create a special snack box. Prepare a few different snack options to put into the box that can be used that day or over a couple of days. Then, when it's snack time, they get the choice of one snack from the box, but when it’s gone, it's gone, and there are no alternatives. It’s great to get kids involved in putting together the boxes and getting a bit creative. Here are some of my favourite snack options. Energy Balls – These are so easy to make and are fab for on the go. They are also a great way to pack in some nutritious foods into a tasty bite. Try these naturally sweet apricot and coconut energy balls. Veggie sticks and hummus – You really can’t go wrong with this classic, and it’s a great way of ensuring you are getting some veggies in, think carrot sticks, cucumber, peppers and celery.  Oatcakes with toppings - Oatcakes are a great, minimally processed store-bought option that is a source of fibre from the wholegrains, but can be brought to life with adventurous toppings. Try combinations like cream cheese and grapes, peanut butter and banana slices or even some Yeo Valley Greek Recipe yogurt and a drizzle of honey. Little Yeos pouches – My go-to for days out, and I know these will be loved by everyone. Mini cheese and grape kebabs – Cut up some Yeo Valley Organic Cheddar cheese into small chunks and thread with grapes onto cocktail sticks. Blackberry muffins with yogurt icing – If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous to bake with your kids then why not try these yummy blackberry muffins. Plus, with blackberries starting to appear blackberry picking makes a great activity to do with kids, fingers crossed there are some left when you get home for your muffins.

Now in our third consecutive year supporting this vibrant celebration of regenerative agriculture, Groundswell continues to bring together a dynamic community of farmers, growers, and changemakers to explore sustainable food systems. From no-till and cover cropping to soil health and carbon capture this is all done with the aim of working in harmony with nature. In the evening, we hosted our own drinks party, giving invited guests the opportunity to connect and raise a glass to a shared vision for a better future in food and farming. Yeo Valley’s Business Change & Projects Manager, Will Mayor, spoke on the Gaining Ground panel, exploring how farms can build resilience through regenerative practices. Will sat alongside our Regenerative Project Manager, Tom White, who leads our agriculture team and has driven initiatives like the Carbon Soil Project and a five-year soil carbon testing pilot at our Somerset farm. He now works across both organic and non-organic dairy supply chains to help develop more sustainable systems. Across two packed days and more than 120 sessions, Groundswell 2025 offered a fantastic opportunity to share ideas, connect with fellow changemakers, and continue driving forward the regenerative movement. There are lots of jobs to do in the garden at this time of year, so I thought we could share some of the most important tasks the team have been carrying out recently… 1. Cutting back herbaceous perennials, and deciduous grasses This task is left for as long as possible because the hollow stems, seed heads and leaf litter from last year’s growth are important food sources and habitats for our wildlife. This job can be done later, however, for the Yeo Valley Organic Gardening Team, we need to cut all the dead stems back as low as we can without damaging any of the new shoots emerging from the base of the plants. The Gravel Garden alone generated over 13 cubic meters of waste, which is now steaming away on the compost heap! 2. Mulching Adding mulch to the surface of our soil is one of, if not, the best thing we can do for our gardens! As we are learning more, we now know that we should be covering bare soil at all times. We cover ours with our own compost. It helps to hold moisture in the soil during the summer, smothers annual weeds, improves soil structure and most importantly, it feeds the soil food web. If your soil microbes are happy, your plants will benefit no end! I could go on for a very long time on this subject, it is fascinating! If you’re interested, I would recommend a book by Diane Miessler called ‘Grow Your Soil!”. Also anything by Dr Elaine Ingham. It’s mind blowing! 3. Splitting snowdrops After the flowers have faded, it’s time to split up your clumps and replant. Doing this will really bulk up your display. Good sized clumps can be split two or three times and be re-planted ‘in the green’ to begin forming a carpet of beautiful white flowers indicating Spring isn’t too far away. 4. Vegetable garden Our beds are already mulched with compost, our soil microbes are happy, and we are ready to go! It’s still a bit early to sow outdoors, but we are busy chitting potatoes, and in the greenhouse we have sown parsley, chillies, tomatoes, broad beans, lettuce and spring onions. 5. Cleaning the greenhouse We clean both the inside and outside, from top to bottom. Clean glass means all our little seedlings will absorb lots of sunlight and grow into strong, healthy plants. By deep cleaning the inside too, we are limiting potential pest and disease problems. 6. Keeping weeds at bay As the days get longer and milder(ish!), the weeds will start growing. Pull them up when you see them because tackling them now means less work later in the season. Well, these are some of the main Spring jobs here in the garden. Caisson Gardens These beautiful gardens in Combe Hay, nestling in a valley just south of Bath, have been lovingly restored and nurtured by Phil and Amanda Honey. Their vision and ethos has created a sustainable landscape that is visually stunning and rich in thriving wildlife, a fantastic place to visit whilst in the area. Just Wild Barn Located in the beautiful Chew Valley with stunning views across Chew Valley Lake, North Hill farm boasts over 150 acres of organic wildflower meadows. With nature at the heart of everything they do, our friends at North Hill have recently implemented regenerative farming practices with the aim of increasing the biodiversity of their landscape. Somerset Farmers Market Support the local community by visiting one of Somerset’s Farmers Markets that runs in various towns throughout the month. The initiative helps promote living sustainably, by inviting local small-scale farmers to sell their produce and with over 100 vendors to choose from, be spoilt for choice! Places for Families Brean Splash Keep the kids active and entertained at Brean Splash Park, which has won GOLD in the Holiday Park pool of the year multiple times. With indoor and outdoor pools, water slides (including a disco one!), and a baby splash pool there’s something for every age. Treasure Trails in Somerset Explore Somerset’s sights as a family by taking one of the 29 Treasure Trails on offer. Crack the code, find the treasure, or discover ‘whodunit’ by taking in the local sites and following the clues. Ferne Animal Sanctuary Help support a local charity by visiting the Ferne Animal Sanctuary. The charity was first set up at the start of World War Two and since then has rehomed and cared for hundreds of animals. Not only can you say hello to the animals, but you can also take a walk around their meadow and woodlands or have lunch in their café. In recent years the British summer staycation has had a major resurgence (just like the old days).

Apart from tasting great, organic grass-fed beef is a great addition to our plates. It’s also a source of protein and micronutrients such as iron, B12 and zinc1. Iron is used for many bodily functions, from contributing to the reduction of tiredness to transporting oxygen around the body in our red blood cells.  At Yeo Valley Organic, our British organic herds roam freely, grazing on organic pastures for as long as the weather allows. These diverse pastures are nurtured in harmony with the soil without artificial fertilisers and chemical pesticides ensuring a natural, sustainable approach to farming. New research shows that what cows eat matters. A study has found that grass-fed organic beef has more beneficial omega-3 fatty acids2,3. It’s believed to be due to organically reared animals eating grass, which contains the fats they require to develop, rather than concentrated cereal feeds. All this burger talk made you hungry?  Our burger-inspired meal ideas have got you covered... To get a flippin’ delicious burger, pan-fry your patty for 10-12 minutes on a high heat until it’s searing hot, then bring the heat down to medium. Cook for a further 5-6 minutes on each side, turning regularly and pressing down firmly. Ensure it’s piping hot and fully cooked throughout before you tuck in. Flippin' Delicious  

As a mum myself, I love to swing by our local cafe en-route to the park for pastries (and much-needed coffee), but most of the time we aim to bring our own food. This not only helps save the pennies but ensures there is something nutritious for the kids to eat, which isn’t always available when you’re out. Preparing food for on-the-go can feel like yet another barrier to getting out the door, but a little prep goes a long way toward making outings with kids that little bit smoother. That is why having little Yeos pouches on hand can be a quick, fuss-free option to grab when leaving the house. With plenty of choices in the range, including No-Added-Sugar and Greek-style Natural pouches, Little Yeos are my go-to.   Some of my other favourite snacks to take are things like fruit, veg sticks, cheese and oat cakes, left over pancakes or something from my freezer stash, like mini muffins or scones, that I take out to defrost the night before.   When the days get a bit warmer, we try to spend more time outdoors with all the excitement of picnic lunches. When preparing lunches on the go, I still aim for balance, meaning we include one of each of the following.   A portion of starchy carbohydrates like bread, wraps, pasta, etc, and aim to include a variety of wholegrain and white versions.   A portion of protein such as beans, eggs, fish, and meat (for on-the-go tinned fish like tuna works well).   Portion of vegetables and fruit. For on-the-go, carrot sticks, cucumber, peppers, and tomatoes are great options; if you have any leftover cooked veggies, these are also easy to bring along.   A portion of dairy and Little Yeo’s Organic Pouches are the perfect on-the-go solution.   Staying hydrated is important, and for most kids, water is the best option alongside their usual milk. My favourite on-the-go lunches include things like pinwheels, sandwiches, fritters, savoury muffins or simple pasta dishes that can be eaten cold. I try to utilise leftovers whenever possible to save time. See below for my favourite salmon, pea and cheddar fritter recipe.  Where possible, it’s great to get kids involved in preparing food to take out and give them some choices so they have a sense of independence and control. It can also help to ensure there are some familiar and trusted foods alongside anything new.   When it comes to packing up food, you don’t need anything fancy; some simple Tupperware or any reusable containers will do. Don’t forget the best bit about eating in the great outdoors with kids is there is no mega clean-up operation involving crawling around under the table with a dustpan and brush.   

Getting out the door with kids is one of life’s greatest challenges, not to mention the number of things you need to pack. Many parents will agree that, for days out, packing snacks is essential for when tummies get hungry. 

A Nutritionist’s Tips for Eating on-the-go with Kids

Six months is also the time most babies are showing signs that they are ready for weaning, meaning they are usually showing these three key signs:   They can sit upright in a seated position and hold their head steady.   They have developed their hand-eye coordination and can bring food to their mouth.   They can swallow more food than is pushed out. This is the tongue thrust reflex, which starts to disappear around 4-6 months.    Introducing solid foods is a fun learning curve for your little one as they will be learning new skills such as putting food in their mouth, biting and chewing.   In the lead-up to weaning, it can be worth spending a bit of time planning and thinking about your baby’s first meals. You can even prep ahead some foods to pop in the freezer.   You don’t need much to start your weaning journey, but you will need a few basic items. See my equipment checklist below for the essentials.   Equipment checklist  Highchair – Supportive highchair, ideally with a footrest, so your baby is in a good, seated position.   Bowls – suction bowls are great as chances are they will be picked up and thrown!   Weaning spoons – Soft spoons that are gentle on little gums   Ice cube tray – Great for freezing small portions and purees   Blender – A stick blender or any sort of blender can be helpful, but not essential, as most things can be adequately mashed with the back of a fork.   Cups – It is good to introduce sips of water so your baby can start to learn the skill of drinking from a cup.   Bibs – Long-sleeved and catch-all bibs are handy, as chances are it will get messy.  It is recommended to start with single tastes of vegetables that aren’t so sweet, such as broccoli, cauliflower and spinach, before going on to combinations of vegetables and sweeter foods like fruits. There is some evidence to suggest that by doing this, you help encourage acceptance of a wider range of flavours and not just a preference for sweeter tastes.   For first meals, that might look like some pureed broccoli maybe mixed with a little of baby’s usual milk served alongside some soft, cooked broccoli florets.   Once underway with weaning and you have introduced a range of foods, including allergens, dairy, in particular yogurt, can be a nutritious addition to your little one’s diet. Dairy provides a range of nutrients such as protein, calcium and B vitamins, to name but a few.   I often find that adding Yeo Valley Organic Natural Yogurt to foods like curries, pasta sauces, and dips is a great way to help nurture babies’ developing palettes. Little Yeos No-Added-Sugar yogurts are also an easy win for fuss free mealtimes. Preparing for weaning can feel overwhelming, but watching your babies’ face as they take their first tastes and the joy that comes with this new and exciting experience is a lot of fun.  

Preparing for weaning and beyond 

It may not come as a surprise that children are eating too much sugar, over twice the recommended amount. Whilst there is no specific limit on sugar for children under the age of 4, it is advised that they should avoid or minimise added sugars. The maximum recommended daily amount of sugar for 4–6-year-olds is 19 g (5 sugar cubes) a day.   Sugar on its own is not a necessary part of our diets and doesn’t add much nutritional value beyond simple calories. We know that too much sugar is bad for children’s health and can have long-term consequences. Limiting sugar is also important for children’s dental health. However, whilst it is easy to demonise sugar, it is also worth recognising that food is also there for enjoyment and sugar can be a part of a balanced and healthy diet, albeit in moderation.  The term added sugars can be confusing, added sugars are sugars that are added to food or drinks, as well as sugars found naturally in things like honey, syrups and juice. Natural sugars, however, are different and refer to the sugars that naturally occur in foods such as whole fruit, vegetables, milk and natural yogurt, and there is no need to cut down on these types of sugars.   In the early stages of weaning and for smaller children under the age of 2, it is helpful to avoid added sugars where possible. In general, babies prefer sweet tastes. When it comes to running and nutrition, getting the basics right is a good place to start. Try to focus on eating balanced meals that contain a source of protein, high-quality carbohydrates (whole grains like brown bread, pasta and rice) and healthy fats.   We are hearing a lot about protein, but what exactly is it? Protein is a macronutrient that is made up of building blocks called amino acids and is important for repairing and building muscle. Protein can also help us feel fuller for longer. Foods that provide protein are things like beans, pulses, eggs, fish, meat and dairy such as milk and yogurt. It is great to incorporate a range of proteins into your diet.   So here are my top nutritionist tips for running. These are very much tried and tested as I recently started out on my own running journey, starting with a couch to 5K and now onto bigger goals! Whatever your level of exercise, whether you're training for a marathon or running for the morning bus, these tips will work for you. Tip 2: Meal planning and prep. Try planning and prepping meals and snacks so when you come back from a run, you have a nutritious meal or snack at the ready. When you increase the amount you are exercising, it is likely your appetite will also increase, so having nutritious foods ready will help. Set realistic goals and don’t worry about planning out the entire week.   I love using the Greek recipe to make simple protein-rich snacks. I like to add berries, nuts and seeds or use it to make a homemade protein shake. See recipe below.   In the Greek recipe range, there is also the option of the 0% fat Greek recipe which is still high in protein but is lower in saturated fats for people looking to limit saturated fats. Tip 4: Have a food-first approach. It is easy to feel the pressure from the wellness world to reach for a supplement or protein powder, but for the majority of us, we can get all the nutrition we need from real food. Whilst there will always be exceptions to this rule, there is no doubt a whole food diet is best and enables you to maximise on all the other nutritional benefits whole foods offer. That is why Greek Recipe, with its simple and natural ingredients, is my go-to. It also tastes absolutely delicious.   Tip 5: Food is to be enjoyed. Try to steer clear of a restrictive approach and instead think about all the wonderful foods you could be including in your diet. That includes a slice of your favourite cake. Dr Alice's Top Nutritional Tips for Running

“It’s been 60 years since my husband Roger and I started our farming career at Holt Farm; 50 years as a yogurt makers and 30 years as an organic brand, I thought it might be interesting to cast my mind back over the changes that dairy farming has experienced during that time. Did you know that in 1961, when Holt Farm was purchased, milk producers in the UK numbered around 100,000 with an average herd size of 22, but today, 90% of those farms have gone and the average herd of 200 is more commonplace. In 1961, Roger and I were able to secure the 150-acre Holt Farm in Blagdon, North Somerset. The farm had accommodation for 35 cows and a small milking parlour. We quickly decided that the land, which tended to be wet, didn’t really suit sheep and so we started to increase the number of dairy cows. We also increased the size of our family as Sarah, born in 1962 was joined by Tim in 1963, and Amanda completed our family in 1969. After nine years, in 1970, we took the opportunity to purchase the neighbouring 40-acre Lag Farm, after arranging further borrowing. We were up to about 150 cows on 200 acres. Later on, we bought Merecombe Farm across the road, this added another 90 acres, but the land needed reclaiming and eventually, we added a milking parlour, where we milked most of the herd in the summer, taking Holt for silage. Using converted buildings at Lag Farm and second-hand equipment bought from a recently defunct milk collection centre, we took the first tentative steps to trial the making of yogurt. As Holt Farm lay beside a busy road, we had also launched into ‘pick your own strawberries and sweetcorn’, growing and selling potatoes as well. We had established a small café with home baked scones and jam, with cream from the dairy herd. Yogurt was the perfect solution for using the skimmed milk that was left over from making cream, although it was still very much a novelty back then. In 1974, we began making yogurt for local shops. As the new enterprise took up more and more of Roger’s time and, as I had always been involved in ‘keeping the books’, this became my prime input for the farm. However, I had become increasingly fascinated by the breeding of British Friesians and this became an all-consuming passion! After Roger died in a farming accident in 1990, I took on the responsibility for the farm as, together with our son Tim, we decided to fulfil his vision for the business. At the time, the farm covered 350 acres and the yogurt business employed 135 people. With the help of Tim joining Yeo Valley, Roger’s existing management team and the talented individuals who have since joined us, the business has grown to formerly unimaginable heights. The decision to convert the farm to an organic system in 1994 was a logical progression to help us become more self-sufficient and, of course, the success of the Yeo Valley Organic products meant that there was a growing demand for organic milk. However, organic is no easy choice, nor is it quick and it was over eight years before we achieved our organic status across all the land. The use of artificial fertiliser and pesticides is, of course, prohibited and it has been fascinating to observe how well the land and the animals have reacted to the change to a more natural way of farming. Over the years, it has been a privilege to have seen more women come into the farming industry; noticeably women working with livestock. At Yeo Valley’s own farms, we are fortunate to have equal numbers of women and men working on the farm. It’s been a pleasure to observe an inclusive environment for all, where everyone feels valued and part of a team. What a journey it has been.

Think all things sweet and savoury! From croissants and quiches to vol-au-vents and pies! Armed with a rolling pin and a passion for pastry, Jade is here to whisk up buttery, flaky treats. Jade started with Yeo Valley on the 13th January, so we thought what better time to sit down and find out what a day in her choux’s looks like…. 1. What did you have for breakfast?  I had a coffee and some shortbread. I’m still getting into a routine with waking up and making breakfast as I have been skipping it and having a double dinner. 2. What’s one thing that surprised you at Yeo? I didn’t realise how big Yeo Valley HQ was until I got lost a few times as there are so many doors! I also underestimated all the different styles of décor and how friendly everyone is, even the big bosses! 3. What led you to Yeo?  Someone I was working with in my last job used to work at Yeo Valley Organic and said nothing but good things about the business. 4. What’s your favourite thing to do in Bristol/Somerset? I love to eat and drink – my favourite pub is Flan O’Briens as they do the best Guinness in Bath! 5. What work-related accomplishment are you really proud of? Simply arriving at work on time every day! I hate waking up early when it is pitch black outside so it makes getting out of bed difficult. 6. If you could add one thing to the office, farm, garden, Canteen what would it be? I think there is certainly room to add a few more disco balls, and the cow could get some more accessories – maybe a cowgirl hat! 8. What’s the best advice you’ve been given? You can’t water dead plants – you’re not going to please everyone so don’t water something that isn’t worth your time. I took this quote from someone I follow on Instagram and have stuck by it ever since. 9. If you could eat one Yeo Valley product for the rest of your life, what would it be? Strawberry yogurt – I have purchased product to try so I’m going to do a taste test as there are lots of yogurts I haven't tried yet. 10. What is your favourite season and why? Spring, as it is my birthday season, and the season of easter baking and mini eggs which are my favourite! As pretty big fans of milk we were very interested to read news that a large UK study has found evidence that people with more calcium in their diet – equivalent to a glass of milk a day – can help reduce their risk of bowel cancer. Good news for dairy fans!  What did the study find? The Oxford University and Cancer Research UK study, suggests that the reason dairy products can have this effect is down to calcium, which can be found in all of our favourite dairy products. They found that an extra 300mg of calcium a day in the diet, or a large glass of milk, lowers your risk by 17%.   The researchers in the study analysed the diets of more than half a million women over 16 years and found that dairy products, as well as dark leafy greens and bread containing calcium also had a protective effect. (We’ll take that as cue to eat more cheesy toasties…) So what is calcium and what is its effects? The lowdown We spoke to our very own Dr Alice Mayor, our in-house registered nutritionist to dig into more of the magic of milk:    “The incredible thing about milk is that not only is it delicious, it is packed with nutrients such as protein, iodine, potassium, phosphorus, and riboflavin, as well as the hero here, calcium. Milk, for many of us, is also an important source of B12 in our diets.  “Milk can help support a range of bodily functions – from keeping muscles, bones and teeth healthy, to supporting normal immune function.  “It is also a whole-natural food that is minimally processed (unlike many alternative milks on the market that are reliant on additives and fortification to improve their nutritional profile to be more like cow’s milk).   “Milk has even been suggested as a good recovery drink after exercise due to its perfect balance of carbohydrates, protein, and electrolytes. “Furthermore, organic cows are out whenever possible, grazing on diverse pastures without the presence of artificial fertilisers and pesticides. This makes their milk more nutrient-rich. Research has shown that organic milk has a higher concentration of omega-3 fatty acids compared to non-organic milk. No matter what time of the year it is, we are always super busy behind the scenes here at Yeo. Nearly 1,700 people work across our five manufacturing sites in Somerset and Devon. The teams are constantly reimagining how we work – upgrading equipment, fine-tuning systems and plotting our future demands. We have been strategically planning stock levels months in advance, ensuring that when the festive rush hits, everyone can grab their favourite Yeo Valley Organic products without a moment’s hesitation. 2. Are there any specific changes made to the production schedule to accommodate the Christmas demand? Christmas is our unique moment to break from our usual 24/7 operations. It's the one time of year we pause our continuous production, giving all our co-owners a chance to enjoy uninterrupted time with their loved ones. We understand the festive spirit extends beyond our walls. That's why we try hard to be flexible with balancing team members' time with our commitment to all our millions of households who purchase a little bit of Yeo every day. It's more than just a production schedule—it's about people, connection, and shared moments. Preparing for the Christmas shutdown is a critical logistical challenge. We carefully plan our stock levels to cover the production pause, ensuring we meet customer needs during the holiday and the start of January—a time when health-conscious consumers are eager for nutritious delicious products like our yogurt and soup. 3. So, what is the key to a successful Christmas period? The team! We are massively fortunate to have such committed and capable teams across our operations which is never more important than throughout the Christmas period and for which I couldn’t be more grateful. 4. Do you have any Christmas traditions with operations? Something that always goes down a treat is the annual Christmas lunch. Wherever our co-owners are based, they take time out to enjoy a festive meal together. Members of the senior team join in by serving the food and showing their appreciation for the team. And who doesn’t love another Christmas roast dinner before the big day? Another highlight is our annual Christmas Raffle, held at all our operations-based sites in Somerset and Devon. With big prizes and enthusiastic participation, the raffles bring an extra dose of festive fun – a tradition we’re all proud of. 5. And finally, what is your favourite Yeo Valley Organic product to enjoy over the festive period? Christmas leftovers might just be my favourite part of the festive period. A good turkey curry topped with a dollop of our Greek Recipe yogurt cannot be beaten!

Yeo Valley Organic does not allow feed additives for the reduction of methane within our supply chain. We instead rely on the natural holistic systems of farming organically. Our focus is based on ecological principles which impose strict limitations on the inputs that can be used to minimise damage to the environment, animals and wildlife.  In the UK organic farming is governed by a legal framework. All Yeo Valley Organic products are certified by an approved control body – the Soil Association.  The Soil Association organic standards stipulate that all ingredients/components of a feed additive must be actively approved for use and be deemed safe and nutritionally useful for the animal.  In relation to Bovaer, the Soil Association has stated that the main components that make up Bovaer are not included in the list of approved products/compounds and as a result, Bovaer would not be permitted for use in organic farming, for all organic products. People who ask this question sometimes go on to ask ‘who owns Yeo Valley?’

With six-and-a-half acres to care for, the Yeo Valley Organic Garden is a hive of activity, and Lynsey is at the heart of it all. From ensuring our veggies and seasonal blooms thrive to sharing expert tips with visitors and planning future planting schedules, there’s never a dull moment in Lynsey’s day.  Read on to discover how Lynsey’s role takes her from the greenhouse to the camera lens - and everywhere in between.  1. What do you do at Yeo Valley Organic?  I’m a gardener in the Yeo Valley Organic Garden.  2. How did you get into gardening?  It all started with a little Juliette balcony overlooking a grotty Bristol street. I bought planters that hung over the railing and started growing flowers and vegetables in narrow troughs. I loved it and spent my days at work longing to be outside, so I decided to retrain as a gardener.  3. And what led you to Yeo?  I visited the Yeo Valley Organic Garden before I even became a gardener and fell in love with it! The garden’s design and sense of humour really stood out to me. It was exactly the kind of place I dreamed of working, so I was absolutely thrilled when I landed the job.  4. What is your top gardening tip?  5. What’s your favourite part of the Yeo Valley Organic Garden?  The birch grove. It feels almost ethereal. Even though it’s right in the middle of the garden, it’s tucked away - you stumble upon it by accident.  6. How do you like to start your day?  I always stretch in the morning - it helps wake my body up before I get to work.  7. What’s surprised you most about your role at Yeo?  How incredibly varied it is! One day we’re weeding, and the next, we’re starring in photoshoots for Which? magazine. If you’d told me that before I joined, I wouldn’t have believed you!  8. Go on, tell us your 15 minutes of fame.  I starred in the latest Yeo Valley Organic soup campaign! It was such a blast. I got my hair and makeup done and spent a morning pulling carrots in front of the camera. Every day truly is different here at Yeo!  9. What’s your favourite season and why?  I love spring - I think most gardeners do! Plants start to wake up, and there’s a wonderful sense of hope for the season ahead. It’s also one of our busiest times, with so many seeds to sow and so little time!  10. What’s a work-related accomplishment you’re proud of?  This might sound boring, but I’m really proud of organising over 25,000 bulbs to be planted in the right areas of the garden. It took two of us and a rather large spreadsheet, but we got it done!  11. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?  I could tell you, but then it wouldn’t be a secret anymore...  12. What did you have for breakfast?  Banana, cereal, and a delicious dollop of Greek Recipe yogurt. It keeps me going all morning!  13. What’s the weirdest fact you know?  Snails have a ‘love dart.’ That’s all I’ll say - some things can’t be unlearned.  14. If you could eat one Yeo Valley product for the rest of your life, what would it be?  Ooh, tough one! Probably the black cherry yogurt. It’s just chef’s kiss!

Alice’s journey took an unexpected turn when she spent a year Down Under. Immersed in the Aussie culture, she fell in love with their approach to food and wellbeing. This experience sparked a new passion, leading her back to London to pursue a master’s in nutrition. And she learned from the best – her lecturers included the renowned Professor Tim Spector.  We’re excited to see what tasty creations she’ll come up with next! 1. What led you to Yeo? I’ve grown up around Yeo my whole life. My grandparents first tried their hand at making yogurt down at our family farm in the 1970’s. This year Yeo Valley Organic celebrated its 30th birthday, and I’m 33 which means I’ve watched all the major milestones and the business grow to become the UK’s largest organic brand.  2. What work-related accomplishment are you really proud of? Whilst I was working as a junior doctor, I got a piece of nutritional research published in a medical journal. This study looked at malnutrition in the community, across multiple age groups. I’m still really proud of this research.  3. How do you prefer to start your day? I have to start my day with a cup of tea. I like a nice strong brew, and then milk goes in last, always. And I love to eat Greek Recipe Yogurt, topped with loads of seeds and honey.  4. What’s your go-to productivity trick?  Every day, I always make sure I take the time to get some fresh air and move my body.  5. What is your favourite season and why? I think Autumn is probably my favourite season, I generally prefer colder weather and love the change of the leaves and the scenery. Also, all the activities that come with the season are really fun with little ones.  6. What is your favourite food? I’m going to be quite basic and say my favourite food is pasta. I love pasta, topped with anything, but I especially love a really good spag bol.  7. What’s your favourite thing to do in Somerset? One of my favourite ways to spend a weekend is by going on a really good country walk and ending up in a cosy pub. I live in Bath, and one of my favourites there is The Raven.  8. If you could eat one Yeo Valley product for the rest of your life what would it be? I would probably say my favourite Yeo Valley product is the Natural Kefir Pot. It’s so easy and delicious. I pop it in my smoothies for a quick gut boost.  9. What’s the weirdest fact you know? One of my favourite nutrition facts is that eating cooked and cooled carbs like pasta and rice increases the resistant starch content, a process called retrogradation. This is a great thing as the resistant starch passes to your large colon where it is fermented by your gut microbes who LOVE it, so this is a good way to increase your prebiotic intake and another reason to love your leftovers! All nutritionists, love to talk about poo and did you know that 50—80% of your poo is bacteria that have been living in your intestine.

Did you know that…  Soil is responsible for around 95% of our food production, yet we know very little about it. One gram of soil is around a quarter of a teaspoon, and this may harbour up to 10 billion micro-organisms – most of which are still unexplored. Soil stores more carbon than the atmosphere and all the world’s plants and forests combined, which means that soil is one of our most important weapons in the fight against climate change. As organic farmers, we’re always trying to find out more about what’s beneath our feet. Regenerative organic farming is based on nourishing the soil, creating a healthy, living ecosystem. Decades of industrial farming have taken their toll on our planet and serious questions are being raised about the future of our food production.  Back in July 2023, the European Commission proposed the continent’s first soil law, intended to undo some of the damage done by intensive farming and mitigate global heating. Research indicates that this could help absorb carbon from the atmosphere and ensure sustainable food production.  This year's World Soil Day theme is ''Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage'' which aims to understand the importance of collecting accurate soil data to understand our soils better and support decision making.  20 of our farmers are part of a pilot project that started back in 2021/22 and will continue until 2026/27 to understand soil better through collecting data. This will help us understand the impact and possibilities soil has in our climate crisis. The project collected 11,000 bags of soil across over 1,100 fields and found over 18,000 worms in its first year!  So what can we look for and smell in good, healthy soil?  ''Healthy soil is important as it underpins everything that we do from growing the crops and forage that are needed to feed the cows to recycling all the nutrients needed on an organic farm. The soil structure should be the texture of a chocolate sponge with a fresh earthy, sweet scent that tells us that there is life down there'' - Tom White, Regen Farming Manager. So don’t dismiss soil, it has more potential than we yet know…

Soil It's A Wonderful Thing 

The garden gate closed for the last time at the end of October, so now the work can really begin! Whilst we are always sad to say goodbye to our visitors it gives us an opportunity to ‘take our makeup off’ and get on with the backstage jobs. For the garden team, the period between closing and reopening in April is the busiest time of year. Bulbs, bulbs, bulbs! It’s a source of great amusement amongst the garden team that from August until November there is a constant stream of bulbs being delivered to Yeo Valley Organic Garden. I try to write notes all year round so that when it comes to ordering bulbs in the Summer (I try to order my bulbs by June to have first 1st dibs of the varieties) I can remember my successes, failures, and thoughts from the previous season. One of the first jobs on closing is getting these bulbs safely into the ground. As we’re talking about somewhere in the region of 30,000 bulbs, this is no mean feat! But our efforts are always rewarded – we know that planting bulbs is an investment in next year’s show and something to look forward to. Our tulips are an exception and are still in their boxes. We’ve got heavy clay soil so we’ve found that it’s better to wait, even until the end of December, rather than have them sitting in the cold damp soil which they detest. In the compost yard… Our compost yard is the life and soul of the garden and Autumn delivers lots of leafy potential. We’re very fortunate that we have access to fallen leaves throughout our five sites and it’s a huge focus for us every autumn. Rather than gathering them, we use a leaf blower and direct our fallen leaves under the hedges and onto the beds where they act as an automatic mulch. However, where they fall on paths, hard surfaces or lawns we gather them up and store in one of our compost bays. The leaves then break down into leaf mould which we use in compost mixes and as a soil conditioner. This is a win win, something for nothing, thank you mother nature. Snuggle down! This is also the time of year when we look to protect our more vulnerable plants. Those that are not reliably hardy at low temperature – especially given our clay soils. Plants that get tucked up for the winter include our gunnera and our tree ferns. Our lemon trees, cannas and brugmansia all get brought into the glass house and the glass house itself gets a lining of bubble wrap to insulate against a hard winter. Feed the birds… At Yeo Valley Organic Garden we don’t cut back our borders until February/March the following year. All those seed heads from plants such like panicum, teasels, sunflowers and amaranth become wonderful delicious natural bird feeders when left over the winter. We do put out our own bird feeders too, particularly concentrating on areas that tend to be higher in pests. The veggie patch and cut flower garden are prime examples. Cover up! Where we have bare areas of soil we like to protect them with a green manure. At Yeo Valley Organic Garden we particularly like phacelia as it can be sown at any time of year, makes dense cover, fixes nitrogen into the soil and also, if allowed to flower, sends up an electric blue flowerhead that is a beautiful bee magnet. We also mulch using our own home-made composts and leaf molds through all our borders, once we have given them a last weed to improve soil structure and add nutrients where necessary. We don’t dig our composts in as we prefer not to disturb the soil structure, we like to allow the worms to do our work for us. Housekeeping… Winter is a great time to take stock and have a good old sort out. Pots should be thoroughly cleaned, tools particularly spades and edgers, sharpened and oiled, mowers serviced and everything cleaned and oiled. Labels are cleaned if plastic or repainted in black if wooden, ready for new signage next year. The glasshouse gets its pre-Christmas clean, making sure all dead plant material is removed and it’s had a good sweep. By the time the team break for a well-deserved Christmas holiday, we aim to have the garden ship shape and Bristol fashion, ready to start the new year with a spring in its step. Did you know we are holding our first ever Yeo Valley Garden Festival in September 2025? A celebration of gardening sustainability, bringing 3 days of celebration packed with expert speakers, workshops, discussions and of course great food to the heart of the North Somerset Countryside. We hope this vibrant gathering will inspire all whether novice or enthusiasts, to explore nature-friendly practices. We can barely contain our excitement - can you?

 Get into our pub!   Following new research that shows 82% of Brits returning - or 'moo-meranging' - to dairy milk after trying alternatives since the start of the year, we felt it was high time to celebrate where it all began - our organic milk.  So, we had Larry Lamb, star of Gavin & Stacey, pay homage to his Eastenders ‘landlord’ role, as he opened up doors to punters to serve delicious creamy pints of organic milk on tap – celebrating the flavour, quality and craftsmanship of our organic milk.   But that’s not all! Our research also showed that over two thirds of Brits enjoy the taste of milk, with their favourite way to consume as a refreshing ice-cold pint (34%). So our guests were also invited to take part in complimentary tasting flights, featuring variations of whole, semi-skimmed, and skimmed milks alongside ‘Gastronomilk’ tasting notes. Plus, our team carefully curated a milk-themed limited-edition menu to showcase the best dairy has to offer.   Herding the experts   Our very own supplier farmer, Sophie Gregory, waved the flag for organic milk, chatting with journalists and influencer, Tasha Stones, all about its creamy benefits. As well as speaking with Clem Elphick, Head of Brand at Bristol Beer Factory, through the interesting intricacies of – and similarities between – the craft of organic milk and milk stout.  Clem also made the moo-st of his top-notch beer knowledge to talk through different tasting notes of the milks, alongside Sophie. And not forgetting we kicked things off with a milk-themed pub quiz, hosted by Yeo Valley Organic aficionado, Dr Phil Hammond. The lucky winning team went home with a generous bar tab to The New Inn. Ready, Set, Bake! We held two cupcake decorating workshops across the day, the first dedicated to our ‘Legendairy Yeokeners’ and the second to our co-owners who are the backbone of everything we do at Yeo Valley Organic.  Frances demonstrated the cupcake and biscuit designs ahead of everyone getting their hands covered in ganache and coconut grass. There were certainly some star bakers and Paul Hollywood handshakes that could have been awarded! It's Time For Tea! 

It's our 30th Birthday and to celebrate we partnered with Frances Quinn to hold cupcake decorating workshops and a teaparty!

From their proudest moments and most tranquil spots in the Valley to exciting new projects, we have really picked their brains to give you a rundown of our best moments as an organic brand over the past thirty years. So, without further ado, take it away, Tim… What moment over the past 30 years are you most proud of? In your opinion, what does the next 5 years of Yeo Valley Organic look like? It's Our 30th Birthday!

1. The Yeo Valley Organic brand was founded back in 1994 by the Mead family, who can trace their farming ancestry back to the 15th century.  2. We’re named after the River Yeo, which runs through the valley where it all started on the Mead family farm.  3. We’re the largest organic brand in the UK consumed by over ten million households a year. But don’t worry it doesn’t go to our head. We’re as passionate today as when we started.  4. Do you remember the rapping farmers of 2011? We do, and frequently hear it being hummed around the office. It was even hummed on Clarkson’s Farm – Series 2, episode 1 – go back and give it a watch.  5. We’ve also got our very own disco, DJ themed ice cream van! We love everything moo-sical.  6. In 1972, Roger and Mary Mead tried their hand at making yogurt with leftover milk from the clotted cream they produced for their tearoom.  7. Did you know that our first flavoured yogurt was strawberry? (Obviously after launching our thick and creamy organic natural yogurt). 8. Our herdsmen and -women on our farm in Somerset all know our cows by name. Some of our favourites are NomNom and Barbara (but sshhh don’t let the others hear us say that!)  9. We’re passionate about soil down here at Yeo and did you know that soil stores three times more carbon than the atmosphere and all the world’s plants and forests combined. Wow!  10. Did you know that there are more living creatures in a single teaspoon of healthy soil than there are people on Earth? Now that’s a fun fact.  11. Over 130 British organic farms now supply us, to make sure all that organic goodness is delivered straight to your favourite store.  12. Our pedigree British Friesian cows here in Somerset graze on our herbal leys, which is a mixture of chicory, oxeye daisy, clovers, cow parsley, buttercups and veitch.  13. Organic farms love dung beetles. Did you know they have been estimated to contribute more than £350 million per year to UK agriculture, as soil engineers, climate enhancers, and pathogen reducers? Pretty nifty.  14. Did you know we make more than just yogurt? We sell cream, ice cream, soup, cheese, butter, milk and much more.   15. We are passionate about regenerative organic farming which helps build healthy soil which is one of the ways we can fight climate change, all while providing people with healthy nutritious food. Did you know milk was considered ‘food of the gods’ in ancient cultures. Many cultures throughout the ages, spanning the globe, placed milk in their foundational myths and highly-valued it. Delicious is at the Heart of Everything we do

Our organic dairy products taste great and are packed with vitamins and minerals that are beneficial in helping our bodies to function well, as part of a healthy balanced diet and lifestyle.  We wanted to share the health benefits of milk, yogurt, cheese and the rest of our delicious products, and let you in on the facts about the wonderful world of organic dairy.  What's so great about Organic Milk?  Organic milk is a great source of essential nutrients such as calcium, protein, omega-3, vitamin B12, vitamin B2, phosphorous, iodine and potassium.  All these nutrients, naturally present in organic free-range milk. Which makes milk a worthwhile part of our diet as they contribute to the normal function of the body in everyday life.  Natural source of calcium  Organic milk is naturally rich in calcium which is needed for the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.  What’s more, there’s little difference in the calcium levels of full-fat, semi-skimmed and skimmed milk – so drink up for calcium, no matter the type of milk you like to drink.  Dairy is a source of protein   There are many ways to include protein as part of a healthy diet, like including meat, eggs, beans and pulses in your meals.  Dairy products are naturally rich in unique protein (the 2 types in dairy are casein, a slow-digesting protein and whey, a more quickly digested protein).  The Good Stuff  Organic milk is a great source of many other essential nutrients. Vitamin B12 keeps your blood and nerve cells healthy. Vitamin B2 and Phosphorous are important for the growth, development, and function of the cells in your body. The responsibility and importance of individual actions for the environment can feel both empowering and stifling, to the point where we can feel overwhelmed by noise, choice and indecision – what can we do to help? The good news is that there is much we can do for nature at home – whether we live in the countryside, city, or suburbs – nature can thrive alongside us. When it comes to making space for plants and animals on our doorstep, from bees to birds to bats - less is ultimately more. I’m no gardener or naturalist, but as a science communicator and new homeowner I often question whether there’s anything I could change about how I manage my little home and garden to make it more welcoming to wildlife. So, through trial (and much error), here are some of my favourite ways to support and encourage nature to return to and linger on your doorstep, wherever you live. Rough and ready gardens for Natural Nesting Material You may have land, or you may have no garden at all - but offering natural nesting material requires little effort but reaps awesome wildlife rewards. Think empty snail shells, seed heads, leafy shrubs and brambles. Naturally, this is particularly useful in the run-up to spring, but species need nature to be available all-year round. So - resist the urge to domesticate the outdoors by keeping it neat and tidy, wildlife prefers it rough and ready!  Cosy Holes Amazingly, the bees responsible for securing at least 30% of the food on our table’s sport among the lowest profile of any insect, overshadowed by their bigger, fluffier, more famous bumblebee cousins. Solitary bees are the underdog of the pollinator world,225 of the UK’s 270 species of bee are ‘solitary’, serving neither Queen nor colony, and not producing honey; their efforts instead focussed on an almighty pollination power. 70%of solitary bees are underground miners, burrowing into patches of bare earth and lawn. Within these tunnels female bees lay an egg on top of a ‘pollen package’, before sealing the entrance with leaves or mud. You can support different species of solitary bees, by offering cavities for them to discover and nest in. To encourage as many species as possible, vary the length and diameter of holes. Drill holes into log piles, fence posts, or even poke holes into patches of bare earth. Stay Hydrated Everything needs water, especially in summer. Don’t overthink it - bees, birds and bats will be equally happy with a sip and a splash from a pond, a bird bath, or even just a shallow dish of clean freshwater. Most national water companies offer free water-saving items, like water butts, for households on a water metre. These are ideal for storing over 100 litres of rainwater and supporting garden nature during the summer when they need it most. Method in the Mow I have a tiny front garden lawn as my test tube, allowing me to experiment. I used to think that a total ‘no-mow’ was a big ‘yes’ for nature. But there’s more to it... According to Plantlife, a total no-mow throughout the year can be counter-productive and reduce the plant diversity of your lawn - especially if your soil is nutrient-rich. But fear not the simple fix is all about length. Garden nature thrives on long and short grasses growing together. Consider leaving a patch to grow tall until the autumn. On hot days in midsummer, I see starlings or sparrows taking refuge in their shade. At the same time, mow strips around this patch on a higher setting every few weeks throughout the summer to allow the shorter, nectar-rich plants to flourish. A simple bit of plant planning can make all the difference too, giving your local patch more resilience and variety.  Come summer evenings, I sometimes see bats swooping in to dine on the increased insect life that has arrived since managing my tiny lawn in this way. And yes, I Iive in a city! Flower Power England and Wales lost 97% of lowland wildflower meadows between 1930s – 1980s. UK grasslands store up to two billion tonnes of carbon to a depth of one metre, yet they and other grasslands around world are still declining. But if given the space, the Bumblebee Conservation Trust estimates an area of wildflower meadow can support up to 40 plant species per square meter! You can help achieve this at home. If a windowsill, balcony, or sunny courtyard is your available space, that’s more than enough real estate for some our most important species: Dandelions. For humans, a weed, for pollinators, an icon. Their sunny, shallow landing pad and high nectar content makes it an essential fuel-station for many different insects. Allium not only look stunning but are dripping with nectar in summer. An essential flower for any pot or border! Dahlias are a brilliant autumnal nectar source. Being mindful of seasonal flora is really important to support pollinators into winter. Chives, (and all herbs) are great if you let them flower (and a treat for the gardener!) Encouraging plants and animals to find a home around your own can be among the most powerful ways of forging and sustaining a lasting relationship with the natural world, your local community and neighbourhood. Make it personal, relish the fun and spontaneity of it, and don’t take it too seriously. Focus on quality over quantity, little and often to let nature do the work it so desperately needs to continue.

Starting solids is undoubtedly a milestone in your baby’s development. But it can also be a time that leaves you feeling nervous and worried. Good news then that weaning is easier than you think. The aim is to gradually introduce your baby to a wide range of tastes and textures, increasing the amount and variety of foods they have over time so that by their first birthday they’re enjoying three balanced and nutritious meals a day with snacks. But it’s not always easy to know when to start. Health experts, for example, recommend waiting until your baby is six months old before giving them solids. Before this time, breast milk or infant formula provides all the nutrients a baby needs. But from about six months, babies start to need more nutrients as they grow – that’s why it’s a good time to introduce them to food. Choosing the right sorts of foods is important, too. The preferences babies and young children develop in the first few years can stick with them for life so make sure you provide plenty of nutritious foods – and a balanced diet – right from the start. Good first foods to offer include baby rice mixed with your baby’s usual milk and mashed or soft-cooked fruit and veg like bananas, apples, avocado, melon, carrots, parsnip, butternut squash and potatoes. Next you can offer soft, cooked meat like chicken, mashed fish (making sure it contains no bones), mashed hard-boiled eggs and cooked lentils, rice and pasta. Plus you can try your baby with full-fat dairy products like fromage frais and yogurt – but make sure you pick ones with no added refined sugar or only small amounts. With World Milk Day just around the corner we decided to catch up with the Queen of Dairy herself Mrs Mary Mead, who will hate BEING called that. Here’s what she had to say about her favourite breed of lovely ladies… “The British Friesian is well-suited to life in and around the Yeo Valley. During the early days, we bought cows from good herds at dispersal sales, looking for strong animals that would last, and these proved to be the foundation animals that we have in our herd today. We can certainly trace our ‘Barbara’ line back to those times. Many UK farmers began to look towards the North American Holstein breed during the 1970s and 1980s to increase their milk yields, but we remained true to the British Friesian: they might not have given us the same volumes of milk, but the quality was high, they had superior fertility and they also lived longer. In addition, their pure male calves are suitable for rearing for beef unlike the Holstein. Our Lakemead herd of pedigree British Friesians has been a closed herd for more than 20 years, which means we haven’t bought in any replacement livestock during that time. One Breed Society exists for the registration of pedigree black and white cows in the UK. Somewhat unfortunately the name has changed several times over the years and more latterly from Holstein Friesian Society to Holstein UK, whilst the Irish have maintained theirs as The Irish Holstein Friesian Society. I’m proud of the role I played in getting separate data for both type and production for the British Friesian, whose reputation for fertility and longevity has long been recognised around the World. Exports of semen continue to flourish, and it is pleasing that our Lakemead bulls have contributed. It pleases me greatly to see how many farmers are now re-discovering the advantages of the breed and I believe British Friesians have much to offer, especially in terms of organic systems.”

Known for its fabulous British beef, sweet refreshing cider, and of course our deliciously creamy Organic Yogurt. Somerset is renowned as one of Britain’s biggest and best food producing counties in the country. With a network of over 8,500 farmers and food producers, the NFU estimate agriculture contributes more than 500 million pounds to the county’s economy not just providing thousands of jobs to local communities but inspiring the next generation of young farmers that will help feed the nation for years to come.  Now you can’t truly celebrate Somerset Day without learning a bit of the local lingo because let’s face it, we’ve got some cracking phrases up our sleeves. Have you ever heard someone say they’re or that’s “Gert lush”? Well, that’s Somerset speak for something mighty fine or downright delightful. If you want to congratulate someone on their great work or doing a good job, a simple “Proper job” will do.  Somerset Day was first celebrated on May 11th 2015 when the not-for-profit community ‘Passion for Somerset’ ran by a board of volunteers decided it was time to officially celebrate all the amazing things the county has to offer, you can read more about the day, its history, events, and how to get involved here.

Paul Hooper, Chairman, The Trails Trust, highlighted plans for opening up the Somerset countryside and how the Environment Land Management (ELMS) programme is supporting farmers in areas of outstanding beauty, such as the Mendips. Completed work includes replanting, improving biodiversity and creating a multi-user path for people to enjoy the countryside. The Duchess of Edinburgh was accompanied by The Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Mohammed Saddiq. Did you know that in 2022/23, the total weight of ‘waste from households’ in England decreased to 21.3 million tonnes down 6.6 per cent from 22.8 million tonnes in 2021/22? [1] Say hello to clear lids! Last summer, we changed the blue and green lids on our milk bottles to ones that are a little less colourful. The Yeo Valley Organic milk bottle lids are 100% recyclable and made of at least 30% recycled material. But even better than that, by removing the coloured dye, when these new clear lids are recycled they can be reused for food-grade packaging. A small change that makes a big impact! Say goodbye to single-use plastic lids After successful trials in 2021, we began saying bye-bye to ‘single-use plastic’ clip lids from our 350g and 450g yogurt tubs. By removing single-use plastic such as the clip lid, we’re removing 145 tonnes of plastic a year – that’s the equivalent of 188 Friesian cows, 24 African elephants or 17 tractors! Worried about the freshness of your delicious yogurt? Here’s some helpful storage tips: Skip the clingfilm and instead use a reusable alternative like beeswax wraps which can be moulded to different sizes Decant your yogurt into a spare Tupperware container. Make sure the lid is tightly sealed. Store yogurt at the back of the fridge, where it’s colder. Make sure it is set to 4°C or below. First in the yogurt world to use 100% recycled plastic Back in 2020, we started changing our yogurt pots to 100% recycled plastics. You might have noticed that these pots seem a little wobbly but that’s because the plastic content is lower than our standard pots. Being made from 100% recycled plastic isn’t easy but it is the right thing to do. 1 Litre Milk Carton It’s the same great-tasting, fresh organic milk, but now available in a fully recyclable carton! Not only are the Yeo Valley Organic milk cartons made of renewable, plant-based materials, but they also use 70% less plastic than the previous bottles. The new 1L cartons are made only of materials that can naturally renew themselves, and in doing so, we’ve cut the carbon footprint of our packaging by more than half. Yeo Valley Organic always want to do better and recognises that no packaging is perfect. That is why we like to experiment with multiple formats to see what works best for consumers and with the UK’s recycling capability. Little Yeos Pouches Although our Little Yeos pouches are not currently kerbside recyclable, we are working hard behind the scenes to find a long-term solution and hopefully create a kerbside recyclable pouch to help improve our circular economy when it comes to plastics. If you regularly enjoy Little Yeos pouches at the moment, most large retailers have drop-off points at the front of stores for soft plastics but, you will need to check if your local store offers this service. Closing the loop on plastic

Being organic farmers, we don’t use chemical fertilisers or artificial pesticides to enrich our soils. Instead, we collect the organic manure and slurry from our cows. We separate the slurry, removing the solids which in turn get composted and the liquid is applied to our grazing and silage grounds. This natural fertiliser is high in nutrients which helps keep our soils healthy and producing good quality crops. It’s our way of feeding the soil! Now that the days are warmer, and drier, our cows will be heading outside in the next few weeks (it’s still a bit cold  for them!). Spring grass is high in energy and protein, we also feed them fibre through the silage that we stored over winter. The perfect combination to keep our cows healthy and producing delicious organic milk! You can read more about our silage process here. Our fields are not only used for grazing our cows, we grow a wide range of crops to help keep our soil packed full of nutrients. Over winter we use cover crops to protect the soil and stop weeds growing. It’s perfect grazing for our sheep too! Any crop we planted last Autumn will start to grow again after being dormant for the colder months. We’ll also start planting more crops in the coming weeks now that we’ve finished spreading the liquid and compost.  To ensure we get the best quality soil for our crops we’re aerating our soil. This essentially means getting oxygen into the soil by making slits in the ground. It’s great for soil health as it allows the water to drain more freely and supports grass growth too. 
With our cows due to return to the fields it’s important to inspect the fences and make sure everything is as it should be. Over the winter months it’s common for posts to get rotten or snap over. By checking these fences, we can also make sure we have the right sized paddocks for our different herd sizes. This ensures we can rotate the herd around our fields, so they always have access to luscious grass. At Yeo Valley, farming organically is part of our history. By using natural methods, like utilising organic manure and slurry and planting cover crops, we can farm in a way that keeps the local environment as healthy as possible. Each animal, crop, and teaspoon of soil plays an important role in the ecosystem of the farm.

We all now know carbon dioxide is the main greenhouse gas responsible for global warming. But, did you know that heating our homes accounts for about a third of the greenhouse emissions produced on UK soil?
Generating our own renewable energy with solar panels or changing to a renewable energy supplier has a huge impact on our individual carbon footprint. But, some renewable energy companies invest in creating more renewable energy. Some fossil fuel companies that offer renewable energy tariffs use the profits from the tariffs to invest more in fossil fuels. So do your research; Which? and Ethical Consumer have independent rankings for the best renewable energy companies. Enjoy Life

Get organised
Really understand what you have now, get to know your clothes, your furniture your drawers full of barely used things. Get it all organised (this time of year is perfect for doing so). Sell what you don't use on platforms like Shwap or Ebay. Donate items and recycle the rest. 
Plan your style
Moodboard the style you want (for interiors or your personal wardrobe), use pinterest or simply take screenshots of what you like and draw up a style you want. Now compare what you actually have to what you want. The difference is your shopping list. 
Consider your shopping habits
Shop small, find small businesses or creators near you online or on the high street. When shopping ask yourself was the person who made this item paid fairly? Will I use it more than 30 times, when I have finished using it will I be able to resell or recycle it? If you feel comfortable with all of the answers, buy it. Tips from Lucy Williamson 
You are what you eat
People often don’t think about sustainability in terms of their own health and wellbeing, but if you are what you eat, it stands to reason that the healthier the food you put in, the better you’ll feel. Nature-positive farming, like organic and regenerative, which ensures healthy soils, which drive our health via our food. Natural foods, farmed organically and kinder to the planet, are richer in microbes and lacking in the chemical components which can disrupt the natural flora and fauna of the gut, therefore kinder to you. Connecting with these food producers directly, bypassing food supply chains for less processed food, ensures better returns to farmers and their communities for a sustainable rural economy. 
Go with your gut
There are 100 billion microbes in your gut and they are key for a long, healthy life. The best way to look after them is by sourcing and eating real, nutrient-rich food and making sure you have plenty of fibre from a variety of veg, fruit, grains, pulses and seeds for natural prebiotic. Probiotic, gut friendly foods are those with natural cultures present, like milk and yogurt; other fermented foods for natural probiotics are Cheese, Kefir, Kombucha, Kimchi and Sourdough. 
Spend time in nature
Science is showing that time spent in nature, up close with our land also benefits our gut health because healthy soils provide many of the same microbes as in our own gut! In general, being outside and connecting with the natural world, plants, insects, birds and bees has a positive effect on our overall mental health and wellbeing. Tips from Tom White 
Create your own compost
Home-made compost is a fantastic way of recycling plant material, feeding plants, soil life and locking carbon back into the ground. Keep your veg peelings, apple cores, banana skins and mouldy fruit – when added to a compost bin they will mulch down over time, encouraging worms, woodlice and insects to digest the food and create a pile of nutrient rich compost to spread on your soil. The best way to speed up your compost is to have a 50 / 50 split of green and brown waste including paper and cardboard, which is also a great way to recycle your waste. 
Make a wormery
Whether you have a garden or not, you can build your own wormery using a glass jar and watch how soil and the worms and organisms that live in it can turn old vegetable peelings into compost which will be perfect to grow some vegetables yourself! Worms can eat a HUGE variety of things including cooked food scraps, fruit and vegetable peelings, tea leaves, coffee grounds, egg shells, bread, pasta and rice. 
Switch your everyday purchases to organic ones
If you’re on a mission to make a difference, a really simple step you can make is to swap out your current groceries, like milk, cheese and yogurt, with organic alternatives and buy grass-fed meat, little and often - the grazing of plants by animals has a major, positive impact on climate change by cycling more carbon out of the atmosphere and putting it into the soil. By choosing to buy organic, grass fed, high-quality meat, you can have a positive impact on the environment.

Inspiration For a More Sustainable Lifestyle

Why Organic Milk? We’ve been producing organic milk and dairy products for over 30 years! We think it’s pretty special for lots of reasons, but so do our farmers too. Yeo Valley Organic’s network of 130 farmers all produce milk to organic standards. But, what does ‘organic’ really mean when it comes to dairy products? On a family farm on the edge of the Shropshire Hills, Chris Jerman has a herd of 70 organic cows. He converted to organic farming nearly 25 years ago. We asked Chris to break down the differences for us…  Are there any differences between being a conventional dairy farmer and an organic dairy farmer? Chris says: “I think fundamentally the challenges organic farmers face are broadly the same as conventional farming in that we are trying to make our land and animals survive and hopefully thrive in an ever more unstable economic and meteorological climate. The difference lies however in how we approach it. Organic farmers have far fewer tools in their toolbox to get out of problems and so we focus far more towards the prevention end of the spectrum than the cure." It sounds like being an organic farmer is rewarding but can it be more challenging than conventional farming? Chris says: “I believe that in farming (and probably in many parts of life) the further you stray from nature the harder your life is going to get and so with a much smaller toolbox in our armoury it's very important in organic farming to mimic nature as closely as possible. I would say the main challenge we face in Organic farming is how to stray towards nature while remaining economically viable." Watch to find out more about our Organic Milk...

Kefir is full of beneficial microbes Yeo Valley’s Kefir has 14 different live strains of live cultures  which can add to the bacteria in our gut, increasing the variety of our gut microbes (our microbiome). This variety of microbes, or ‘biodiversity’ is just as beneficial for gut health as biodiversity is in nature. 2. Get the most from your food The bacteria present in fermented foods such as Kefir also help to ‘pre-digest’ food for us, making the many nutrients in dairy easier for us to absorb. Healthy Sugars The natural sugars (lactose) present in dairy, trigger the fermentation process in making kefir; the longer it ferments, the less these natural sugars are present in the food. This reduction of sugar can reduce the stimulation for further sugar cravings.
