Soil – the recipe for ReGeneration

Wednesday 12th October 2022

Here at Yeo Valley Organic, we’re doing our best to take care of the soil and we’re proudly supporting the first ever UK Soil Awareness week from October 10-16. Although for us soil is important 24/7, 365 days a year!

Did you know that soils are essential for life? They provide a medium for plant growth, it is literally where all our food begins. As well as habitats for many insects, micro-organisms, and a filtration system for water. And amazingly soil holds more carbon than the atmosphere and all of the world’s plants and forests combined. This means that soil is one of our most important weapons in the fight against climate change. That’s why we believe organic farming is part of a solution to some of our greatest challenges- and the very recipe for our ReGeneration.

As an organic brand for over 25 years, we’re used to working in harmony with nature and regenerative organic farming seems a like a natural continuation of our work. In this way we’re locking carbon into the soil, making it more fertile, reducing erosion and increasing resilience to droughts and floods. It is an approach that benefits the entire ecosystem.

With the help of our Regen Organic Farming Project Manager – Tom White, we’ve buried organic cotton pants to test the health of our soil. Cotton pants are biodegradable, and if all goes well, the microbes in the soil will devour them. Leaving just the elastic waist band! Believe us this is a phenomenon in regenerative farming circles. It’s also big news in Radio 4 The Archers. So, if it’s okay for Jill Archer it’s okay for us too…

Here’s our Tom explaining all…

To support UK Soil Awareness Week there’s some fun ways of testing your own soil knowledge too:

Why not give their Soil Quiz a try to see if you’re Soil-literate. To prepare for it, you can have a look at their Soils Lexicon that will give you more in-depth knowledge of soil.

They’ve also created a list of Top Tips for healthy soils that will help you execute what you have learned. Go and get your hands dirty!
